Nina Ligon

Nina LigonNina is a dual US and Thai citizen, who has competed for both flags as a junior, and now that she has turned 18, she has elected to represent Thailand. In 2007, at the age of 16, Nina and her horse Pacific Storm won the Individual and Team Gold medals for Thailand at the Southeast Asian Games in Pattaya, Thailand. Nina became both the youngest rider and the first woman to win an individual equestrian gold medal for Thailand.  She was one of 5 finalists nominated for Rookie Athlete of the Year and was named 2007 Rider of the Year in Thailand. Nina received a royal medal from the King of Thailand for outstanding service to the country. In the US, she was the 2010 USEA Young Rider of  the Year.

Nina is a graduate "B" ponyclubber. She started riding at the age of five and has trained every day after school and competed on weekends. She is competing successfully at the 2** level.  She retired her gold medal horse, Pacific Storm, after he suffered an injury and currently competes several other horses; Fernhill Fearless, a 10 year old Irish Sporthorse, Chai Thai, a 9 yr old Dutch Warmblood/Selle Francais,  He's a Star, a 10 yr. old Irish Sporthorse, Tokay, a 10 yr old Dutch Warmblood and Jazz King, an 11 yr old Irish Sport horse cross. Her trainer is Kim Severson, a US Olympic silver medalist and three time winner of the Rolex Kentucky Four Star. Kim is a great teacher, mentor and role model for Nina. Nina takes regular dressage clinics with Gerd Zuther, and has done a few showjumping clinics with Katie Prudent.

Nina has graduated from high school and received early acceptance to Stanford University.  She deferred enrollment for a year in order to ride for Thailand at the Asian Games in China in November 2010. Nina and Chai Thai led the Thai team to Team Silver. They led after dressage and cross-country but one rail down in the team and the individual showjumping rounds dropped them to 4th place individually.

Nina will primarily focus her gap year on moving up to the three star level. Her longer term goal is Olympic qualification.
